It’s also crucial to remember that everyone is different and can respond differently to treatments.

Determine the cause

The first step in addressing hair loss is identifying its cause. Speaking with a health professional who is an expert in diagnosing the root cause of hair loss, can guide you to treatment plans based on individual needs.

Initially, specific questions will be asked based on your health history to determine how long the hair loss has been occurring and if there have been previous attempts at treatment.

  • Blood test. A blood test can detect medical conditions that can cause hair loss.
  • Pull test. Your doctor will test your hair by gently pulling on it to determine whether or not
  • Scalp biopsy. Your doctor scrapes samples from the skin, or a few hairs plucked from the scale to examine the hair roots under a microscope. This can help determine whether an infection is causing hair loss.1
  • Light microscopy. Your doctor uses a special instrument to examine hairs trimmed at their bases. Microscopy helps uncover possible disorders of the hair shaft.1
  • Assessments. Doctors will assess other areas, including the nails, to collect clues about your overall health.

Common treatment options for hair loss

  • Minoxidil (Rogaine). Minoxidil is a liquid used to help the early stages of hair loss; however, it cannot grow an entire head of hair. It is used to stimulate hair growth and prevent further hair loss. It tends to be more effective alongside other treatments for hair loss, and noticeable results typically take between 6-12 months.1
  • Laser. Laser caps and combs can be used at home to treat hair loss. A study conducted revealed that patients saw overall thicker and fuller hair by using these devices. More studies are needed to see who will benefit from these treatments and any potential side effects.1
  • Microneedling. A microneedling device contains hundreds of tiny needles used to stimulate hair growth. A study compared hair growth between those who used minoxidil and microneedling with minoxidil. Results showed significant improvements and more hair growth for those using microneedling and minoxidil.2 Microneedling can also be used with platelet-rich plasma, a component of our blood that contains more platelets, preventing further hair loss.
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Research indicates that PRP therapy is a beneficial treatment for hair loss. The procedure involves taking a small blood sample, which is then processed in a machine to separate its components. The plasma component is injected into the region with hair loss to prevent hair thinning and hair loss.1
  • Medication. Prescription medications are widely used to treat hair loss conditions due to hormonal imbalances, genetics, and medical conditions such as alopecia. Finasteride is a prescription medication commonly used to treat male pattern baldness by blocking a hormone that shrinks hair follicles.1 Spironolactone is another medication used to treat hair loss caused by hormonal imbalances.1 Spironolactone is used to prevent further hair loss and increase hair thickness.1

Final takeaway

Do hair restoration treatments really work? Yes, but with a few considerations

Different hair loss conditions require specific treatment methods, and not all treatments can result in hair regrowth for everyone.

Some treatments instead focus on enhancing the thickness of existing hair or preventing further hair loss.

Finally, lifestyle changes that include quitting smoking, eating well and exercising, and minimizing stress are necessary for optimal results.
