What is Ultherapy?

A non-invasive lift

Ultherapy is an FDA-approved, non-invasive procedure that lifts and tightens the skin.

It is typically used to treat the skin of the neck, jawline, eyebrows, and décolletage.

Ultherapy uses ultrasound waves to generate a thermal effect in the tissues below the surface of the skin which stimulates the natural healing of damaged tissues.

Production of new collagen tissue in the treated areas results in a rejuvenated, more youthful appearance.

While Ultherapy is a relatively new application for ultrasound, ultrasound waves have been safely and effectively used in the medical field for more than 50 years.

Since Ultherapy was approved by the FDA in 2009, more than a million individuals have undergone this treatment, with outstanding cosmetic results.

What areas does Ultherapy target?

Ultherapy can be used to target four top areas – your neck, chin, chest, and brow.

It can also be used to contour loose and sagging skin on the knees or thighs and to reduce the appearance of a double chin.

Ultherapy is used to reverse the signs of aging and can be used as a preventative maintenance or to improve the results of lift surgery.

How Does Ultherapy Work?

Revive collagen and elastin naturally

Ultherapy harnesses the power of micro-focused ultrasound to create a thermal effect beneath the surface of the skin, providing a safe and effective way to achieve a more youthful appearance.

It employs focused ultrasound waves to treat the deeper layers of the epidermis (skin) and is used to counteract signs of aging like skin sagging and wrinkles on the face, neck, and chest.

This effect jump-starts the body’s natural ability to create new collagen for firming and toning results.

As people age, the structural proteins in the skin begin to deteriorate. This is especially true for collagen.

Collagen is an important structural protein that is responsible for maintaining the elasticity and strength of the skin. Both, the quantity and quality of collagen decrease as we age, causing wrinkles and folds to develop.

By strengthening existing collagen and increasing the production of new collagen, Ultherapy can improve the tone and youthful appearance of the skin.

Ultherapy uses ultrasound waves to apply heat beneath the surface of the skin, thereby stimulating collagen production in the skin tissues. It delivers the right amount of ultrasound energy to the right depth of skin at the right temperature, triggering a natural response in the skin to start the regenerative process.

As new collagen is produced, it begins to lift and tighten the skin, with visible results typically beginning to appear over the next 2-3 months following treatment and continuing to improve for up to 6 months. Ultherapy treats deep layers of the skin without disturbing the surface of the skin.

Ultrasound can also be used as an imaging technique for doctors to visualize the specific area and layer of the skin that would benefit the most from treatment; this means that every Ultherapy treatment is unique to the individual and, therefore, maximizes results.

Common side effects

Common side effects of Ultherapy include skin redness, pain, slight swelling, tingling sensation and tenderness, and temporary numbness.

Other reported side effects include a slight redness or swelling to the targeted area immediately following the procedure, and a tingling sensation in the hours after the procedure.

Is Ultherapy the right treatment for you?

Ultherapy targets lines and wrinkles, and is most effective at treating mild-to-moderately sagging or wrinkling skin.

While the treatment can produce remarkable results in skin tone and smoothness, it does not address blemishes like acne damage or pigmentation issues.

Those issues would require a different type of treatment, such as peeling, LED, or BBL.

If you are looking for a long-lasting, non-surgical lift for your skin, this may be the right treatment for you!

FAQ about Ultherapy

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly will I see the results of an Ultherapy treatment?

Ultherapy results are based on the stimulation of natural healing processes. Because of this, results are not instantaneous.

As damaged tissues beneath the skin begin to heal and new collagen is produced, visible results start to appear.

This typically takes 2-3 months to become noticeable, and results continue to improve for up to 6 months following treatment. This treatment is aimed at long-lasting results rather than a “quick fix”.

How long is the recovery time?

Little to no downtime is required following an Ultherapy treatment. At most, patients typically report some mild redness, swelling, or tenderness of the skin following a treatment, but this resolves within 24 hours in most patients.

How many sessions are recommended?

A single treatment session typically produces results that will last for up to a year.

While the results are long-lasting, they are not permanent; because of this, a consultant will work with you to create a treatment schedule that will maintain optimal ongoing results for you.

Can this be used in combination with other treatments?

Yes, Ultherapy can be combined with other treatments to maximize your results.

While Ultherapy produces outstanding results in addressing sagging or wrinkling skin, it does not address other issues, such as acne blemishes and pigmentation issues.

Because of this, you may be advised to combine Ultherapy with other forms of treatment to achieve your desired results.

What can I expect during my treatment?

  • Following your initial consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment and what type of results you are hoping to achieve, your personalized treatment plan will be developed.
  • At the beginning of your Ultherapy treatment, the medical practitioner will first cleanse the skin and identify specific areas to be treated.
  • Ultrasound gel will then be applied and a smooth treatment applicator will be used for deep skin imaging.
  • Focused ultrasound energy will then be delivered in the optimal places with optimal energy levels.
  • During the treatment, you can expect to feel some discomfort; however, there are several forms of pain management available to you to maximize your comfort throughout the procedure.

Is it painful?

Your comfort is of primary importance to us! Each of our patients is unique, with different levels of pain tolerance and varying levels of anxiety going into a medical procedure.

With our nitrous oxide delivery system, you are able to control how much and how frequently nitrous oxide is delivered using a mouthpiece that administers a 50/50 gas mixture containing nitrous oxide and oxygen; which means maximum relaxation and minimum discomfort.

Nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as laughing gas, decreases anxiety, increases the sense of overall well-being, and inhibits the transmission of pain signals during a procedure.

This analgesic is safe, effective, and, better still, you are able to drive yourself home following your treatment!

Is there scientific research to support this treatment?

Yes! Ultherapy has been approved by both, the FDA and Health Canada and is a popular and effective choice worldwide for treating wrinkled or sagging skin.

A recent study published in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open found that, at the end of 6 and 12 months, 93% of participants noted improvements in their mid and lower face appearance and 85% of participants in the study were satisfied with their results after one year. (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open: December 2019 – Volume 7 – Issue 12 – p e2498. doi: 10.1097/GOX.0000000000002498)
